Alumni association presents new virtual alumni experience

BY JOSH CHAPIN, MANAGER OF EDITORIAL SERVICES

Alumni Weekend 2020 is going virtual June 11-13, and Emily George Beliveau is here to guide you through the upcoming digital experience. Emily, the associate director of alumni engagement for the Miami University Alumni Association, has been a familiar face at Alumni Weekends in the past, and now the annual event is one of her main focuses each year.

With on-campus activities put on hold for Alumni Weekend 2020 because of the ongoing COVID-19 health crisis, Emily and the alumni team have been hard at work organizing a digital version to bring some of Miami’s famous Love and Honor to Miamians all over the world. From a toasted roll tutorial to Alumni College webinars, check out the schedule at MiamiAlum.org/AlumniWeekend. Be sure to mark June 11-13, 2021, on your calendars as well for Alumni Weekend 2021.

Q&A with Emily George Beliveau

What can alumni expect from this year’s virtual Alumni Weekend?
“When I think about this year’s Alumni Weekend, and all that has happened the last few months, I reflect on the role of community. It’s evident that Miami’s community is strong. We have seen it through the many ways alumni have come together to lift each other up, volunteer their time, donate to the student Emergency Needs Fund and share their favorite memories to reconnect. We know alumni have heard the term ‘unprecedented’ or ‘uncertain’ from many facets of their life. 2020 has been a challenge, but a welcome change. Cue virtual Alumni Weekend. This year will highlight what alumni love about coming back to Oxford for Alumni Weekend, but also introduce virtual Alumni Weekend programming. There are many unique programs throughout the weekend, and we look forward to spending time with you, wherever you are.”

What are you most excited about virtual Alumni Weekend?
“There is not just one webinar or activity I am most excited about. We focused energy on making sure there was something for everyone!”

What is your favorite Alumni Weekend tradition or activity?
“At the cost of sounding cheesy, my favorite part of Alumni Weekend is MiamiFest, celebrated Saturday night. There is something special about looking around a crowd and seeing Miamians and future Miamians of all ages laugh, smile and dance the night away.”

What tips do you have for alumni to get the most out of Alumni Weekend 2020?
“My tip is to go into the three-day event with an open mind. I know moving everything we all love digitally will look and feel different. While I can’t give you the opportunity to hug your friend you haven’t seen in years, I can give you an online community to stay connected and amazing learning opportunities.”
